An In-Depth Guide to Sunscreen: A Comprehensive Guide

1. Use sunscreen correctly. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply at least 15 minutes before going outside. Use about 1 ounce (a shot glass full) for full-body coverage. Don’t forget ears, neck, lips (SPF lip balm), hands, and feet. Reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.

2. Wear Protective Clothing Opt for long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats to shield your skin. Fabrics or clothing with built-in UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) should be tightly woven and dark in color. Sunglasses with UV protection help prevent eye damage and premature aging.

3. Seek Shade Avoid direct sunlight, particularly between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are at their strongest. Use umbrellas, trees, or UV-blocking sun shelters for protection. Be mindful that surfaces like water, sand, and snow reflect sunlight, increasing exposure.

4. Avoid Tanning and Sunburns Skip tanning beds—they emit harmful UV radiation that increases the risk of skin cancer. If you want a tanned look, use a self-tanning lotion instead of sunbathing. If you get sunburned, cool the skin with aloe vera or a cool bath, and stay hydrated to help skin heal.

5. Protect Your Skin Year-Round Even on cloudy or cold days, ultraviolet (UV) rays can penetrate clouds and cause skin damage. Snow, water, and high altitudes increase sun exposure, so take precautions in winter and while skiing or hiking.

6. Keep Your Skin Hydrated and Healthy Drink plenty of water to keep skin hydrated. Eat foods rich in antioxidants (like berries, nuts, and leafy greens) to help repair sun damage. Use moisturizers with SPF for daily protection, even if you’re not spending the day outside.
